PLEASE NOTE: FUNDS RAISED BY THIS CAMPAIGN WILL BE USED TO PAY FOR MELISSA’S TREATMENT. ANY FUNDS RAISED IN EXCESS OF WHAT MELISSA NEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO LYMPHOMA AUSTRALIA.
Melissa was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in July 2013, the so-called ‘Good Cancer’. She was supposed to be cured after 6 months of relatively well-tolerated chemotherapy. She was not cured and this is not the 'Good Cancer'.
Now, after enduring 15 months of treatment including grueling salvage chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant (after first line treatment failed), as well as a severe lung infection that almost claimed her life, the lymphoma has progressed. Her doctors are now recommending a new type of treatment; a drug called Brentuximab, which is not on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in Australia, meaning patients have to pay for it, at a cost of $10,600 per treatment. A full course involves 16 treatments.
Melissa is a single mother of two beautiful young children, now aged 7 and 2 years. She desperately wants to be here to see them grow up, get married and have children of their own. She wants to be a grandmother and her family and friends want to see her grow old too. Brentuximab is currently her only hope of achieving remission and getting her to a position where she could have a potentially curative stem cell transplant using donor stem cells. A world-wide donor search has been underway for months and a suitable donor has not been found.
Melissa needs your help to fund the cost of Brentuximab so she can achieve remission – if you can help, please click on the ‘Give Now’ button. Donations over $2 are tax deductible. Any money raised in excess of that needed to cover the cost of Melissa's treatment will be donated to Lymphoma Australia.
If you are willing and able to join the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, you might save Melissa’s or somebody else’s life. This is a gift that money just can’t buy. More information about joining the registry can be found at www.abmdr.org.au
